Dark loose leaf tea

Tea

Liu Bao is a tribute tea from the 18th century. The tea literally means ‘Six Castles’ and is named after it’s original production region in Guangxi province, China. It is one of the most well known and classic Chinese dark teas (Heicha), produced from the medium to large size leaf tea plant species. It includes multiple unique and ancient stages of processing before being compressed and stored away for post-fermentation. It is traditionally aged in big bamboo baskets, which gives the dark brown leaves a pleasant bamboo hue, with the main flavour note of betel nut and a beautiful ruby liquor. If stored correctly and fermented under the right conditions, this tea ages beautifully and can be kept for many years to come, improving in taste and value.

We love this heicha for its abundant 'golden flowers', or 'jin hua' — a friendly fungus, Eurotium cristatum* that grows on the tea leaves over time in the production and/or ageing process. This is a sign of excellent fermentation and is considered very healthy to drink. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, as well as to aid digestion and remove heat from the body. Liu Bao has been used medicinally for centuries, it became extremely popular during the Qing Dynasty in China and Asia, and was used as a medicinal food to settle conditions caused by different climates and environment.
